Take it in English

The CBR motor theory exam is conducted only in Dutch. To take it in English you need a CBR-listed interpreter. Read our full guide on how to book an English interpreter for the CBR motor exam. Total cost with interpreter: ~€356.50.

Amsterdam-specific hazards the CBR tests

A surprising number of hazard-perception questions are framed around Amsterdam-style urban scenarios. If you ride in Amsterdam you already see these daily — the trick is matching the answer pattern the CBR expects.

  • Cyclists on phones — Amsterdam has Europe's highest cycling density. The CBR scenario is almost always "release the throttle", not "brake hard", unless the cyclist is in your immediate path.
  • Trams crossing your path — trams have priority unless signs indicate otherwise. Always assume the tram won't stop.
  • Tourists stepping into the bike lane — looking the wrong way for traffic. Release throttle as you pass any group of pedestrians clearly disoriented.
  • Cargo bikes (bakfiets) turning without signalling — wide, heavy, slow. Increase following distance.
  • Tight, one-way canal streets — frequent C2 "no entry" signs. Misreading one in traffic is a common test-prep mistake.
  • Cars exiting parking parallel to the canals — limited visibility, may pull out into the bike's path.

Booking tips

  • Amsterdam slots fill 2–4 weeks ahead. Book the interpreter after the CBR slot is confirmed.
  • English-interpreter exam = 45 minutes (vs 30 for Dutch). Don't book a tight day of meetings around it.
  • Bring ID. Without it, you forfeit the slot — both the CBR fee and the interpreter fee.

Riding schools in Amsterdam that teach in English

DutchTheory covers the theory side. For the practical exams (AVB + AVD) you need a motorcycle riding school. Schools known to teach motorcycle lessons in English in the Amsterdam region include de Motortrainer, MMS Motorrijschool, and several smaller independents. Confirm English availability when you book — not all instructors at every school speak fluent English.
