Where to sit the exam

Utrecht has its own CBR theory-exam location in the city, and the large CBR Nieuwegein office sits just south of the ring if Utrecht slots are booked out. Reserve through MijnCBR with DigiD — the booking screen shows the exact street address and the available time slots for each location, so always confirm the address there rather than relying on an old one.

Take it in English

The CBR motor theory exam is conducted only in Dutch. To take it in English you need a CBR-listed interpreter (the I-T product). Read our full guide on how to book an English interpreter for the CBR motor exam. Total cost with interpreter: ~€356.50. If you’d rather skip the interpreter fee, train in English first — most DutchTheory users do.

Utrecht-specific hazards the CBR tests

Hazard-perception questions are framed around the kind of dense, mixed-traffic city riding Utrecht is famous for. If you ride here you meet these daily — the exam trick is matching the CBR’s expected answer pattern (usually release the throttle, occasionally brake, rarely do nothing).

  • Student cyclists in dense packs — Utrecht has the country’s highest student-cycling density. The CBR scenario is almost always “release the throttle and cover the brake”, not “brake hard”, unless a cyclist swerves into your path.
  • The canal wharfs (werven) — Utrecht’s split-level canals mean pedestrians and cyclists appear from stairways and narrow quaysides with poor sightlines. Expect blind-exit scenarios.
  • Tight medieval centre + one-way mazes — frequent C1/C2 entry restrictions and bus-only sections. Misreading a no-entry sign in traffic is a classic test trap.
  • Roundabouts with separate cycle rings — cyclists on the roundabout often have priority. Always assume the cyclist will continue.
  • Construction around Utrecht Centraal / Jaarbeurs — shifting lane markings and temporary signs override permanent ones. The exam tests the rule that temporary signage takes precedence.

Booking tips

  • Utrecht is centrally located, so slots fill fast — book 2–4 weeks ahead.
  • Book the interpreter after your CBR slot is confirmed — the interpreter agency needs your CBR candidate number.
  • English-interpreter exam = 45 minutes (vs 30 for Dutch). Don’t schedule a tight day around it.
  • Bring valid ID. Without it you forfeit both the CBR fee and the interpreter fee.

Riding schools around Utrecht that teach in English

DutchTheory covers the theory side. For the practical exams (AVB + AVD) you need a motorcycle riding school. Several schools in the Utrecht region offer motorcycle lessons in English — confirm English availability when you book, because not every instructor at every school is fluent.
